Why Do Bosses Who Understand DDP All Make Money in Cross-Border Trade?
发布时间:2026-09-30 15:10:32

Cross-border e-commerce competition is becoming increasingly fierce. Whether you are doing Amazon FBA first-leg shipping or B2B wholesale orders, many cross-border bosses have heard of DDP, but most only know it as "tax-inclusive delivery" and are vague about the specific rules, applicable scenarios, and hidden pitfalls. Once you get the delivery terms wrong, at best you lose freight and taxes, and at worst your entire shipment gets detained or abandoned, causing heavy losses. Today we will explain DDP in plain language to help cross-border bosses understand the rules and avoid pitfalls.

01
What Exactly Is DDP?

DDP stands for Delivered Duty Paid. It is a very commonly used trade term in international trade. The core division of responsibilities is this: from domestic stocking and shipping, to export customs clearance, international transportation, import customs clearance in the destination country, payment of tariffs and value-added tax, and finally delivery to the buyer's designated address, all risks, freight, taxes, and miscellaneous fees throughout the entire process are borne by the seller. The buyer only needs to wait to receive the goods, does not need to handle any additional steps, and does not need to pay any additional fees. Compared with common trade terms such as EXW and FOB, DDP is the delivery method in which the seller bears the largest scope of responsibility, and every stage of the entire process must be managed and controlled by the seller.

In recent years, DDP has become increasingly popular in the cross-border industry. The core reason is that the development of cross-border e-commerce has created huge demand. Whether it is Amazon FBA warehousing, independent-site delivery of large items to customers' doors, or even small and medium-sized B2B wholesale, overseas buyers are increasingly inclined to choose DDP terms. For buyers, DDP does not require them to deal with the complicated customs clearance and tax payment process, and there are no hidden costs, so the shopping experience is much better. For sellers, if they want to win orders and secure customers, in many cases they must meet buyers' DDP requirements. Therefore, almost all cross-border bosses now must understand DDP rules, or they will not even be able to get orders.

What Is the Difference Between DDP and DDU?

Many cross-border bosses who are new to DDP confuse it with another similar term, DDU. In fact, the two differ by only one word, but the core division of responsibilities is very different. DDU stands for Delivered Duty Unpaid. Like DDP, the seller is responsible for delivering the goods to the buyer's designated address, but the core difference is who bears tariffs and import VAT. Under DDU, taxes are paid by the buyer, and the seller only needs to handle transportation and does not need to bear any tax costs.

In addition to the difference in who bears taxes, the risk division between the two is also completely different. Under DDP, from domestic shipment to buyer receipt, if any problem occurs at any stage, such as customs inspection, cargo detention, or additional miscellaneous fees, the seller must bear it. Under DDU, after the goods arrive at the port, the buyer is responsible for customs clearance and tax payment, and most problems are the buyer's responsibility. Many novice Amazon sellers suffered big losses when they first entered the industry precisely because they confused the two terms. When shipping to FBA, they chose DDU. As a result, after the goods arrived at the port, Amazon would not help them clear customs or pay taxes at all. In the end, the goods could only sit at the port, incurring thousands of yuan in demurrage fees every day. They either had to pay several times the cost to pay taxes and pick up the goods, or directly abandon the goods, losing everything. This pit is stepped into by many newcomers every year.

What Scenarios Is DDP Suitable For?

DDP is not suitable for all cross-border orders. Different order types require different delivery terms. At present, the most common applicable scenario is Amazon FBA first-leg shipping. We all know that Amazon only provides warehousing and delivery services as a platform. It does not act as an importer to help sellers clear customs, nor does it help sellers pay any tariffs or VAT. If the seller does not do DDP, no one will handle customs clearance and tax payment, and the goods cannot enter the FBA warehouse at all. Therefore, almost all goods shipped to Amazon warehouses currently use DDP terms, and the seller must handle all customs clearance and tax payment procedures in advance before the goods can be successfully stored.

The second common applicable scenario is small and medium-sized B2B wholesale orders. Nowadays, many overseas offline retailers and small wholesalers like to purchase from China. They themselves do not have professional customs clearance teams and do not want to spend time handling various import procedures, so they all require Chinese suppliers to do DDP, covering all costs and procedures. They only need to wait to receive the goods and sell them. In addition, independent-site sellers of large items such as furniture and home appliances also mostly choose DDP, because if buyers are asked to pay tariffs themselves, it is very easy for them to refuse delivery due to sudden additional costs. Doing DDP can greatly reduce the refusal rate and improve store conversion rates and positive reviews.

The Core Advantages of Doing DDP

For cross-border sellers, the most direct advantage of doing DDP is that it improves the buyer's shopping experience and increases the seller's transaction rate. In the increasingly competitive cross-border industry, for the same product at the same price, buyers will definitely choose the all-inclusive DDP service so they do not have to worry about anything themselves. Many sellers doing direct mail have encountered this situation: after the goods arrive in the destination country, the buyer needs to pay hundreds or thousands of yuan in tariffs. The buyer feels cheated and directly refuses delivery or abandons the goods. The seller not only fails to receive payment but also has to bear the return freight, losing twice the money. Doing DDP completely avoids this problem.

In addition, doing DDP also allows sellers to better control the entire logistics process of the goods and avoid being unable to find the responsible party when problems arise. Reliable DDP channels generally provide double clearance and tax-inclusive service. The freight forwarder has already connected with customs brokers and tax payments in advance. Sellers can track the entire process and handle customs clearance problems as soon as possible. Unlike DDU, where if the buyer has a customs clearance problem, the seller still has to coordinate and waste a lot of time and energy. For brand sellers, stable DDP service can give buyers a better experience, enhance brand reputation, and bring more repeat purchases and referrals. In the long run, the benefits are very large.

Common Pitfalls When Doing DDP

Although DDP has many benefits, there are also many pitfalls. The first and most common pitfall is inaccurate tax estimation. Many novice sellers only estimate tariffs simply based on cargo value when quoting customers, without considering that different product codes have different tax rates, and without leaving room for policy fluctuations. Sometimes when the destination country adjusts the tax threshold or tax rate, the actual taxes generated are much higher than estimated. The seller can only bear this difference. Originally making a few hundred yuan on an order, in the end they lose thousands, making it not worth the loss.

The second common pitfall is customs clearance risk and hidden costs. Many unscrupulous freight forwarders quote very low DDP prices to attract customers, but in fact rely on undervaluation and tax evasion. Once customs investigates, not only must high taxes be paid, but fines must also be paid, and the goods may even be directly detained. All losses are borne by the seller. Some freight forwarders only quote freight and basic taxes when quoting, hiding many customs clearance fees, remote-area delivery fees, and door-to-door fees. After the goods arrive, they ask the seller for more money. Otherwise, they hold the goods and refuse to deliver them. The seller has no choice but to pay. In the end, the total cost is much higher than the quote initially written by a reliable freight forwarder.

What Should Be Noted When Doing DDP?

If you want to do DDP well and avoid pitfalls, the first point is that you must find reliable freight forwarders and customs brokers, and never look only at price and ignore service. Many small freight forwarders quote 10% to 20% lower than large ones, but in fact they attract customers through undervaluation or cutting services. If problems arise, they directly disappear and cannot be found to solve them. Reliable freight forwarders will accurately estimate taxes based on your product value, quote you an all-inclusive price, will not add charges midway, and will also help you prepare a compliant customs clearance plan in advance. For sensitive goods, they can also help you find corresponding customs clearance channels, greatly reducing the risk of detention.

The second point is that you must make a budget in advance and include all possible costs in the quote, including freight, tariffs, VAT, customs clearance fees, delivery fees, and even possible inspection fees. All of these should be reserved in advance. Do not omit costs just to win orders, or you will end up losing money yourself. If it is a long-term large order, you can also agree with the buyer in advance that if tax fluctuations caused by policy adjustments in the destination country exceed a certain proportion, the excess part will be shared by both parties, avoiding bearing all losses alone. As long as you understand the rules and find the right partners, DDP can help you improve competitiveness and win more orders. For cross-border bosses, the earlier you understand it, the earlier you benefit.
